Pour vaincre le terrorisme, il faut s’assurer que les organisations terroristes ne peuvent avoir de refuge sur aucun continent.
À cette fin, en attendant la consultation avec le Congrès, les États-Unis s’engagent aujourd’hui à hauteur de 60 millions de dollars pour soutenir les efforts antiterroristes de la Force interarmées du G5 Sahel. Cet argent renforcera nos partenaires régionaux dans leur lutte pour assurer la sécurité et la stabilité face à l’EIIL et aux groupes affiliés et autres réseaux terroristes. C’est un combat que nous devons gagner, et ces fonds joueront un rôle clé dans la réalisation de cette mission.
Je regrette de ne pouvoir participer personnellement à la réunion des Nations Unies sur la sécurité au Sahel, mais je remercie le Ministre des affaires étrangères Le Drian de son invitation et je félicite la France et tous les autres partenaires pour leur empressement à gagner cette bataille. J’ai demandé à l’ambassadeur des Nations Unies, M. Haley, de représenter les États-Unis et notre engagement total en faveur de la sécurité dans la région du Sahel à ma place.
United States Pledging up to $60 Million in New Support for Security Assistance in the Sahel Region
Defeating terrorism depends on making sure terrorist organizations cannot have safe havens on any continent. To that end, pending consultation with Congress, the United States is today pledging up to $60 million dollars to support the G5 Sahel Joint Force’s counterterrorism efforts. This money will bolster our regional partners in their fight to ensure security and stability in the face of ISIS and affiliated groups and other terrorist networks. This is a fight we must win, and these funds will play a key role in achieving that mission.
While I regret I cannot personally attend today’s meeting at the United Nations on ensuring security in the Sahel, I thank Foreign Minister Le Drian for his invitation, and commend France and all our other partners’ eagerness to win this fight. I have asked UN Ambassador Haley to represent the United States and our full commitment to security in the Sahel region in my place.
